Esther before the King

Esther Denouncing Haman by the British painter Ernest Normand (1859-1923). This is an old popular subject in religious art. But Normand painted it like a history or orientalistic painting with the great theatrical gestures which were popular.

    Great painting. I have seen all the mid 17th century Dutch paintings about Esther, the King, Haman and Mordechai, and loved them.

    But you are right about this being very different. Normand's colours are rich, the gestures heroic and the gloomy atmosphere removed.

    The difference is that Rembrandt didn't think of "history". He painted Dutchmen with turbans.
